Hello! My name is Sara. I’d like to introduce myself by sharing a bit about me as a person. I am from Colorado, and like so many others who reside in this great state enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. Rafting, camping, and fishing are my jam! Other activities that I enjoy are gardening in the summer, sewing, and DYI projects. I am still trying to finish up some that I foolishly started during COVID that were WAY beyond my skillset. To say that there has been a steep learning curve involved would be a serious understatement.
I am the dog mom of two that I rescued during COVID. They are my world and take high priority in my daily life. Animals hold a special place in my heart, especially dogs, because of the unconditional love they offer. Other areas that hold value to me are family (whether that is those we choose or those we are related to), being kind, and showing grace, both to others and ourselves. Welp, that is probably enough about me as a person, now on to the professional part!
Below is a brief snippet about my professional history working in the human services field. When I first started, I worked with individuals struggling with addiction who were also under criminal justice supervision. I worked in residential, outpatient, and detox during this time. I also began the process of earning my licensed Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS). After some time, I began to feel frustrated at the limits of what I could do based on my skillset. This was when I decided to further my education and went back as a non-traditional student. I completed my master’s in social work at Colorado State University where I also earned a graduate certificate in military and veteran culture. While completing my internships for this program, I gained experience working with veterans and survivors of intimate partner violence. I continued my educational journey at the University of Colorado Denver where I worked towards a master’s degree in counseling with an emphasis in clinical mental health. I joined Peregrine Counseling and Wellness as an intern and stayed on as staff after, which brings us to today!
My therapeutic philosophy is that each of us will encounter challenges as we experience this journey called life. I also believe that we each possess the power to accept, adapt, and/or heal as these concerns arise within us. I see my role as a counselor to be present and support you in that process, both emotionally and through the application of therapeutic techniques. Though there are many therapeutic approaches, I believe interactions should be based on the individual situation and what your specific goals are that you’d like to accomplish while in therapy. I have the capacity to be empathetic, genuine, and kind, but I can also be direct and unwavering/firm. If you choose to work with me expect the use of both humor and to be challenged, but mostly, expect to work side-by-side creating a space where you can continue to grow and achieve your goals.
